Historical Chisago County Death Records

Death registration in Chisago County goes back to approximately 1870. Early records from the 1870s through the 1890s may be incomplete or sparse, as rural Minnesota counties varied in how consistently they enforced registration. Coverage improves after 1900 as state registration standards became more uniform. The requirements now in Minnesota Statute 144.221 reflect that long history of vital records law.

Minnesota launched its electronic death registration system in 1997 and was fully statewide by 2001. Deaths before that year were recorded on paper, and many have been scanned and indexed by MNHS. For records not found online, the Chisago County Government Center or the Minnesota State Archives at 345 Kellogg Blvd W, St. Paul may have the physical records you need.

Note: Deaths registered from 1997 forward can be obtained from any Minnesota county vital records office. For Chisago County deaths before 1997, contact the Government Center at (651) 213-1500 or MDH at 651-201-5970.
