Cass County Death Record Fees
The fee is $13 for the first certified copy of a Cass County death certificate. Each additional certified copy ordered at the same time costs $6. Non-certified copies are $13 each and are available to any person without requiring proof of a family connection. Non-certified copies cannot be used for legal purposes like estate administration or insurance claims but work well for genealogy and historical research.

Who Is Eligible for Cass County Death Records
Certified death certificates from Cass County require a tangible interest under Minnesota Statute 144.225. Eligible parties include the decedent's spouse or domestic partner, parents and grandparents, children and grandchildren, and siblings. Estate representatives and attorneys working for eligible family members are also covered. Government agencies with a lawful need and individuals with a court order may request certified records as well.
Non-certified copies are open to anyone. Under Minnesota Statute 13.10, data on deceased persons has broader public access than data on living individuals. This is why non-certified death records face fewer restrictions. If you're not sure whether you qualify for a certified copy, call the Cass County Courthouse at (218) 547-7272 before submitting your application.

For older Cass County deaths, the Minnesota Historical Society People Records Search is the best free online option. It covers roughly 1904 to 2001, drawing from digitized state vital records. Historical Cass County Death Records
Cass County's death records begin around 1870. Early records from the 1870s and 1880s can be incomplete, as registration was not consistently enforced in rural Minnesota counties at that time. Coverage improves after 1900, when state vital records requirements became more uniform. Minnesota Statute 144.221 governs current registration requirements and reflects the long history of death recording in the state.
Minnesota's statewide electronic death registration system launched in 1997 and was fully implemented across all counties by 2001. Deaths before that year were recorded on paper. Many pre-1997 records have been scanned and indexed by MNHS, but some exist only in physical form. For records not found through online tools, contact the Cass County Courthouse in Walker or the Minnesota State Archives at 345 Kellogg Blvd W, St. Paul.
Note: Deaths registered from 1997 forward can be requested from any Minnesota county vital records office. For Cass County deaths before 1997, contact the Courthouse at (218) 547-7272 or MDH at 651-201-5970.
