They work well for genealogy and family history research.

Who Can Request Carver County Death Records

Certified Carver County death certificates are restricted to those with a tangible interest as defined by Minnesota Statute 144.225. Close family members are the primary eligible group: a surviving spouse or domestic partner, parents and grandparents, children and grandchildren, and siblings. Estate representatives, attorneys acting on behalf of eligible family members, government agencies with a lawful need, and individuals with a court order may also request certified records.

Non-certified copies are open to anyone without needing to show a family connection. Minnesota Statute 13.10 provides that data on deceased persons is subject to broader public access than data on living individuals. Non-certified copies are often sufficient for genealogical research, while certified copies are needed for legal matters like estate administration or insurance claims. If you're not sure which type you need, call the Carver County office at (952) 361-1930.

Historical Carver County Death Records

Death registration in Carver County goes back to approximately 1870. Early records from the 1870s and 1880s can be incomplete, as rural county registration was inconsistently enforced during that era. Coverage improves through the 1900s as Minnesota vital records law became more uniform. The current requirements under Minnesota Statute 144.221 reflect this long history of registration law in the state.

Minnesota's statewide electronic death registration system launched in 1997 and was fully implemented by 2001. All deaths since then are in the statewide digital database. Pre-1997 records were paper-based; many have been digitized and indexed by MNHS, though some may only exist in physical form. For records not found online, contact the Carver County Government Center at (952) 361-1930 or the Minnesota State Archives in St. Paul.

Note: Deaths registered since 1997 can be requested from any Minnesota county vital records office. For Carver County deaths before 1997, contact the Government Center at (952) 361-1930 or MDH at 651-201-5970.
