How to Request Carlton County Death Certificates
In-person is the simplest and fastest method. Go to the Carlton County Courthouse at 301 Walnut Ave in Carlton with a valid government photo ID. No notarization is needed for in-person applications. Payment is by cash or check at the courthouse. The office can generally process same-day requests.
If you're requesting by mail, notarization is required. Complete the application, sign it before a notary public, and send the notarized form along with a copy of your ID and a check or money order made out to Carlton County. Allow extra time for mail processing. No fax option is listed for Carlton County.
You can also request through MDH by mail using the same notarized process. The MDH death records page has a standard application form and step-by-step instructions. For MDH requests, make payment to the Minnesota Department of Health. MDH mail processing typically takes a few weeks.
The MDH vital records page has the forms and process details for ordering Carlton County death certificates by mail or for using the state system as an alternative to the county office.
Carlton County Death Certificate Fees
Carlton County uses the statewide fee schedule. Certified copies cost $13 for the first copy and $6 for each additional copy ordered at the same time. Non-certified copies are $13 and are open to anyone, regardless of their relationship to the deceased. Non-certified copies can't be used for legal purposes like probate or estate administration, but they're fine for genealogy or personal use.
Veterans may be entitled to free certified copies for VA benefit purposes. Ask about this when you apply. The courthouse accepts cash or check. Mail-in requests require a check or money order.
Who Can Get Carlton County Death Records
Certified Carlton County death certificates require a tangible interest, as set out in Minnesota Statute 144.225. Close family members are always eligible: the deceased's spouse or domestic partner, parents and grandparents, children and grandchildren, and siblings. Estate representatives, attorneys working on behalf of eligible family members, government agencies with a lawful purpose, and individuals with a court order are also covered by the statute.
Non-certified copies are available to anyone. Minnesota Statute 13.10 recognizes that data on deceased persons has broader public access than data on living individuals, which is why non-certified copies face fewer restrictions. If you're uncertain whether your relationship qualifies you for a certified copy, call the Carlton County office at (218) 384-4281 before submitting your application.

Historical Carlton County Death Records
Death registration in Carlton County goes back to around 1870. Records from the early decades of registration can be sparse, particularly from the 1870s through the 1890s, when rural counties in Minnesota had uneven compliance with registration requirements. Coverage improves significantly through the early 20th century. Minnesota Statute 144.221 now governs how deaths must be registered, building on over a century of vital records law.
The electronic death registration system began in 1997 and went fully statewide by 2001. Before that, records were maintained on paper. Many have been scanned and partially indexed by MNHS. For records not found online, the Carlton County Courthouse or the Minnesota State Archives in St. Paul may have what you need.
Note: Deaths registered since 1997 can be requested from any county vital records office in Minnesota. For Carlton County deaths before 1997, contact the Carlton County Courthouse at (218) 384-4281 or MDH at 651-201-5970.
